The goal of the Bloomberg(Dow
Jones-UBS) Commodity Index is to provide a diversified representation of the
commodity markets. The index components consist of exchange traded futures on
physical commodities, and currently represents 20 commodities individually
weighted to account for each markets economic significance and market liquidity.
Weighting restrictions on each commodity as well as the commodity groups assist
in promoting diversity. The intent is such that no commodity group constitutes
more than 33% of the index, and no single commodity more than 15%. The index is
reweighted and rebalanced annually, so between rebalancings weighting may
fluctuate to levels outside these limits.
The index was introduced on July 14, 1998, but has been back computed to 1933.
